Natural ways to prevent hair loss. Hair loss affects both men and women. Genes play an important role but other factors, such as an under-active thyroid gland, hormonal imbalance, insufficient blood circulation in your scalp, or nutritional deficiencies, often need to be considered. Many hair growth and miracle cures claim to produce results but prevention is still the best way to help retain all your hair and keep looking youthful. Take Good Care of Your Hair!

NATURAL WAYS TO PREVENT HAIR LOSS

Be kind to your hairTo begin promoting your healthy hair habits, start by choosing a good cleaning method. I recommend: Nizoral 2% shampoo and conditioner, Nioxin shampoo and conditioner or Head and Shoulders shampoo. Avoid unnecessary damage to your hair: limit the use of hair dryers, hot curlers, flat irons, hair straighteners and harsh chemicals. Heat and certain chemicals may cause hair loss by weakening the hair proteins. If you dye your hair, try to do it in intervals of not less than 4 to 6 weeks by a trusted professional. Make sure your hair stylist is thorough about removing all dye from your scalp. Don’t pull your hair too tightly: avoid tight ponytails, tight braids, corn-rows and plaits. Instead, treat your hair gently using wide toothed combs and brushes with soft bristles. Never brush wet hair or vigorously dry your hair with towels. These actions may cause your hair to break. Practice healthy eating and use a hat when exposed to direct sunlight.

Stress is one of your hair’s biggest enemies. Reduce stress through meditation, exercise,  deep breathing and a healthy ability to vent negative feelings or anger. Less stress goes a long way in preventing hair loss as well as many other forms of disease.

A gentle, daily scalp massage promotes healthy hair growth and improves blood circulation. You can use castor oil on your scalp once a week; either overnight or for a minimum of 30 minutes. This stimulates the hair follicles, which is essential for healthy hair growth.

When choosing vitamins and/or supplements be sure to include: Biotin, Vitamin C and D, Iron, B12, Saw Palmetto, 3mg Melatonin and Visviscal Professional. These vitamins and supplements are rich in amino acids and nutrients and essential for healthy hair. If you have questions, be sure to consult a physician or hair care specialist.

Balancing your hormones is probably one of the most overlooked causes of hair thinning or loss. Although hair loss is not life threatening, many practitioners in the medical community don’t consider its importance to some patients during a consultation. I regularly hear from patients who felt self-conscious or were embarrassed to ask their primary medical providers for direction. Many doctors aren’t aware of the credible and valid technology available to stop the genetic predisposition for a patient concerned with hair loss. I am often surprised to learn of the many leaders in the medical community  unaware of the advances in hair transplant surgery.  My suggestion is to ask your annual medical provider for blood work to include the following: Testosterone, Progesterone, Estrogen, DHEA, Prolactin, Ferritin, Iron, Vit D, T3, T4. Once you have that information,  take your results to a hair restoration clinic and explore options with a specialist.
